B.J. Thomas, a country and pop hitmaker
and five-time Grammy winner who contributed to the Southernization
of popular music in the 1960s and ’70s, died on Saturday at his
home in Arlington, Texas. He was 78.
The cause was complications of lung cancer,
said a spokesman, Jeremy Westby of 2911 Media.
Mr. Thomas’s biggest hit was “Raindrops
Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which was originally featured in the
1969 movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and spent four
weeks at the top of the pop chart in early 1970.

Keep Fallin’on My Head”は大ヒット、カーラジオから毎日のように流れてきた。1970年の初めにヒットチャートNo.1だった。同じころ、Simon
& Garfunkel に夢中になっていた時期だった。『明日に架ける橋』をギターを弾きながら歌っていたのだ。
今、Raindrops Keep・・・と聞いても、私の瞼にはBurt
BacharachとHal Davidの顔が浮かぶだけ。BJトーマスの顔は見たこともないから脳みそに浮かんでこない。
B.J. Thomasのレコードを買った記憶はないが、念のため、CD棚の「B」の部を見てみた。そこで出てきたのは、
Barry Manilow、Benny Carter、Benny
Goodman、Benny Golson、Bette Midler、Big-T & Bada-Bings、Bill
Evans、Billie Holiday、Billy
Eckstine、Billy Paul、Bing

Sainte-Marie、Burt Bacharach、バッキー白片とアロハハワイアンズ。
やっぱり無い。やっぱり名前も知らない歌手だった。
